FATHER OF ISRAELI SOLDIER FIGHTS FOR HIS SON’S RELEASE Noam Shalit, the father of captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, formally asks the Israeli government to fight harder for the release of his son. Shalit has been held captive by Palestinian militants since June 25, 2006. In a statement, Noam Shalit says: “I call on the prime minister, listen to the people. Get the strength from them to make this difficult decision before it is too late.” (CNN)

CLINTON BEGINS SOVIET TOUR IN UKRAINE US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrives in Kiev, to kick off a tour of five former communist nations. The trip is intended to strengthen US relations with the former Soviet states. (BBC)

SUICIDE BOMBERS ATTACK US COMPOUND IN AFGHANISTAN Six suicide bombers storm a US aid compound in Afghanistan, killing four. The attackers were later killed during a six-hour-long gunfight, although no American casualties have been reported thus far. (NYT)

RWANDAN FUGITIVE ARRESTED ON GENOCIDE CHARGES A Rwandan pastor charged with genocide and crimes against humanity is arrested in Uganda, 16 years after the 100-day genocide that began in April 1994. (NYT/AP)

SENATOR BYRD’S VIEWING EXTENDS INTO EARLY MORNING Thousands of mourners attend the viewing of recently deceased West Virginia senator Robert Byrd. The viewing reportedly continued well past midnight. (AP)
